Our 240mm² Single Core Aluminium Wire Armoured (AWA) Cable is a high-performance, durable, and reliable solution for fixed power and auxiliary wiring. Designed to meet IEC 60502-1 standards, this cable features XLPE insulation, a protective Aluminium Wire Armour (AWA), and a robust PVC oversweath. It is engineered for a rated voltage of 0.6/1kV, making it an excellent choice for a wide range of demanding indoor and outdoor applications where a 240mm² cross-section is required.

Key Specifications

  • Rated Voltage: 600/1000 Volts (0.6/1kV)
  • Conductor Cross-Sectional Area: 240mm²
  • Conductor Material Options: Soft Annealed Copper or Aluminium
  • Insulation: Cross-Linked Polyethylene (XLPE), rated for 90°C
  • Armour: Aluminium Wire Armour (AWA) – specifically for single-core cables
  • Oversheath Material Options: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) or Low Smoke Zero Halogen (LSZH)
  • Core Configuration: Single Core

Applications

This 240mm² Single Core AWA Cable is specifically designed for robust power and auxiliary fixed wiring in various challenging environments:

  • Power Networks: Essential for main power distribution lines requiring 240mm² capacity.
  • Underground Installations: Suitable for direct burial or installation in trenches.
  • Outdoor Applications: Designed to withstand external environmental factors.
  • Indoor Applications: Safe for use within buildings and industrial facilities.
  • Cable Ducting: Ideal for installation within conduits and ducts.

Its aluminium wire armour provides excellent protection against mechanical stress for single-core applications, while being non-magnetic for AC circuits, preventing eddy current losses.

Standards Compliance

Our 240mm² Single Core AWA Cables are manufactured and tested to comply with or exceed the requirements of the following international and British standards:

  • BS 5467: Electric cables. Thermosetting insulated, armoured cables for voltages of 600/1000 V and 1900/3300 V.
  • IEC/EN 60502-1: Power cables with extruded insulation and their accessories for rated voltages from 1kV (Um=1.2kV) up to 35kV (Um=40.5kV) - Part 1: Cables for rated voltages of 1 kV (Um=1.2kV) and 3 kV (Um=3.6kV).
  • IEC/EN 60228: Conductors of insulated cables.
  • Flame Retardancy: Compliant with IEC/EN 60332-1-2 (single vertical insulated wire or cable).

Construction Details

0.6/1KV Aluminium Wire Armoured AWA Cable CONSTRUCTION

The cable's layered construction ensures high performance, durability, and safety:

  1. Conductor:
    • Material: Plain circular, compacted, or shaped stranded copper or aluminium conductor with a nominal cross-sectional area of 240mm².
    • Types:
      • RE = circular solid
      • CC = compacted circular stranded
      • SM = sector shaped stranded
    • Conforms to relevant IEC standards for Class 2 conductors.
  2. Insulation: Cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE), designed for a 90°C rated temperature, offering superior electrical properties and high temperature resistance.
  3. Colour Identification (for single core): Typically Red or Black.
  4. Bedding (Inner Sheath): An extruded layer of Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC) is applied over the insulated conductor, providing a protective bedding for the armour layer.
  5. Armour: Aluminium Wire Armour (AWA), applied helically over the bedding. AWA is specifically used for single-core cables to prevent the induction of eddy currents in AC circuits, which would lead to overheating.
  6. Sheath: An outer layer of PVC Type ST2 as per IEC 60502-1 or Type 9 as per BS 6346/5467.

Customization Options & Fire Performance

We offer various customization options for the outer sheath to meet specific project requirements:

  • Special PVC Sheathing:
    • Fire Retardant PVC
    • Anti-Termite PVC
    • Anti-Rodent PVC
    • Sunlight Resistant PVC
    • Oil Resistant PVC
  • Alternative Sheathing Materials:
    • LLDPE (Linear Low-Density Polyethylene)
    • MDPE (Medium-Density Polyethylene)
    • HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene)
    • LSZH (Low Smoke Zero Halogen): Cables can be supplied with LSZH material, complying with standards like IEC 60502-1, BS 7211, BS 6724, or other equivalent standards, to minimize smoke and corrosive gas emission in fire conditions.
  • Enhanced Fire Performance: Cables can be supplied with special flame-retardant PVC outer sheaths to comply with the flame test requirements of IEC 60332-3-22 (Category A), IEC 60332-3-23 (Category B), and IEC 60332-3-24 (Category C) for bunched cables.
